Weekends are usually the time to relax, stay at home, go out to have fun, spend time with friends and/or family members, do you see a pattern here? Yes, it is a time away from work. Some of us do enjoy work, but after a long week of seeing patients, we do need a break.
Occasionally we do have to work weekends though. Either pre-weekend nights or on the weekend itself. For some, it means time away from home as we have to stay on site. For others, there a mixture of morning rounds and on-call from home, not required to come to work at all and stand-by from home, working in shifts and lastly weekend clinics.
Although their work doesn’t sound so stressful, but rest assured, being on-call anywhere can be stressful. One has to be contactable at all times and be ready to come to work.
Hence we are always thankful for a work-free weekend. So what we ask for is some kind of understanding that occasionally, we do not turn up for functions at work during weekends as we have spent enough time there already [without pay we might add]. We do try but as the saying goes, family comes first.
Happy weekend to everyone. This has been a busy week. We just wish that we could have a two day weekend but if wishes were pennies, we would all be rich by now.

Jadi kamu ani inda join tarik kalat kelmarin?
Are we overworked then? Working hours in Brunei is flexible and we have all worked crazy hours in UK/Aus and is it really comparable to work here? Get over it!!! Stop whinging. It was for a good cause and its not to be oncall or see patients. Enjoy colleagues company (not on a work basis), play a bit of friendly competitive games, bring your children – they might even enjoy it. Its 4 hours of a Sunday and wow is it really going to influence that much quality “family time” u will have – that is nearly the amount of time you spent on 2-3 lunch breaks. And FYI – most people had a fun time!
Why are we comparing to UK And Australia? We were paid more. Much much more. We are not complaining about the working hours, we became doctors didn’t we. In fact we would love to go back to working in UK or Australia which goes to show we are not afraid to work hard. We just want to be a little more appreciated. And our weekends were ours, whether we wanted to jet over to Europe or rot in front of the TV. BTW we could afford it the jetting too.
This site is turning into a local doctors’ version of brudirect. I do not see a united voice. All I see is a bunch of whiny doctors who would rather spend their working hours complaining and whingeing over the minus points of working in Brunei.
For a change, look at the brighter side of things. You are now closer to your loved ones, you are looking after your own people, your on calls are relatively light. Of course we have to compare ourselves to the times when we were working abroad. You cannot have it both ways. There are things which we hated overseas. It’s not all hunky-dory but did we come up with a blog to moan about it?
I don’t want to act like a brown tongue. There are things which I agree in here too. But it is becoming too gloomy and I think it is a good idea to brighten things up for a change. We are in our own country. If we only think about the negative things, we will only end up being miserable doctors. Our patients will be the only ones who suffer at the end of the day.
Do bear in mind, apart from the people you are targeting, our patients have access to this site too. So do our soon to be colleagues and aspiring doctors.
Kepada Dejected. Bagus jua kalau berdebat (debate?) ani.
